U20 Girls Summer Info

Delaware Valley Youth Ultimate (DEVYL) is creating a U-20 Girls Summer Club Team in 2023  The team will be heading to the USA Ultimate's Youth Club Championships to compete for a National Championship.  The tournament is taking place August 5-7, 2023 in Aurora, Colorado.

Coaches:

JANINE HLAVATY:  My name is Janine, and I am super excited to be a part of DEVYL’s U20 coaching staff for the 2022 season! I’ve been playing club ultimate for 6 years. I’ve played on Jughandle (2016-2017), BENT (2018-2021), and I’ve played with NY Gridlock for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. When I’m not playing ultimate, I’m coaching it instead! I’ve been coaching Rutgers Nightshade for 4 years as well as some high school teams along the way. I have two crazy dogs that unfortunately do not love frisbee as much as I do, but they sure do love eating my socks. Fun fact: Karnas and I went to the same high school, but just many years apart! #GoWildcats

MEGAN MA: Hey everyone! My name is Megan Ma and I’m pumped to be a part of the coaching staff for the 2022 U-20 DEVYL team. I’ve been playing for 9 years, starting at Watchung Hills high school as a freshman and being a U20 DEVYL player for 3 years. I went on to play at Rutgers University and experienced two different club teams during my college career, BENT (a NYC-based womxn’s team) and Jughandle (a NJ-based mixed team). I had such an amazing time coaching DEVYL last year and I’m even more excited to be on the staff for a second year. Can’t wait for a fun and competitive youth club season! Fun fact: I can say my ABCs backwards!

OLIVIA WOODRUFF: Hey all, I’m Liv! I am so excited to be joining the U20 staff for my second year. I have been playing ultimate frisbee since I was 10. I played for Sparkle Motion and DEVYL when I was in high school and I’ve been a part of various adult club teams such as Broad City and Jughandle. Now, I’m in my last year of college where I play for Rutgers Nightshade. I also helped coach Sparkle Motion at states and was a counselor at Maplewood Ultimate Camp. Outside of frisbee I have been reading, thrifting, and learning how to skateboard. Fun fact: I went to worlds for a sport called Fistball!

ANNA MASCIANDARO: Hi y'all, my name is Anna, and I'm thrilled to be DEVYL's U20 coordinator for the 2023 season! I started playing frisbee during my sophomore year at Westfield High School and continued to play throughout college at Rutgers University. I also played a very brief season in 2022 with PBNJ, NJ's only womxn's club team. In 2021, I had the opportunity to help coach DEVYLopmental, and I'm excited to be back and helping out in an administrative capacity. When I'm not watching frisbee on the sidelines, you can usually find me completing a paint-by-numbers project. Fun fact: I own three typewriters!

Summer Schedule:

As shown above, tryouts are taking place in March.  The team will be selected at that time as players return to their school based teams for the spring season in April and May.  During that time, we will remain in touch and work on travel logistics.

In June, we will begin regular practices for this team. Practices generally happen twice a week.  Once on the weekend and one weekday evening up until the tournament.  It is common for players to go away on vacation and miss a week.  We will develop an exact summer schedule when the team is selected including prioritizing a few practices.

Youth Club Championships:

Players will likely fly into Denver CO on August 4th.   The general schedule will look like this:

August 4th - Fly Into Colorado - Check into the hotels, and have a team meeting.

August 5-7th - The YCC tournament takes place at the Aurora Sports Park, Aurora CO

August 8th - Fly back to NJ.

Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend as well.  Many do and have a great time.

Cost:

The cost for the whole program is usually around $1300-$1700.  This is not just for the trip, but for the entire team experience starting with tryouts in March, team practices all summer, high level coaching, and everything to do with the trip.  That includes flight, hotel, tournament fees, busing, and a super memorable experience of battling against the top teams in the nation.
